About Us
Wanamakers General Store is an authentic family-owned General Store nestled in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country.
Our nearby neighbors include Leaser Lake Boats, Bikes & Bait, Hawk Mountain Bird Sanctuary, and The Country Seat.
Also nearby is Hawk Mountain B&B and Pamela’s Forget-Me-Not B&B, and Eight Oaks Distillery.
Additionally, the WK&S Steam Railroad stops at the store on summer weekends.
Origins
In the 1870’s the original portion of the store was built from brick manufactured in the adjoining meadow. Additionally, the timber used in the construction was milled from the slopes of the Blue Mountains in Northern Lehigh County. In 1886 Elias Hoppes, a civil war veteran (present at Lee’s surrender at the Appomattox Court House) purchased the building and opened a general store. Since then the store has remained operational through these other Pennsylvania families: The Reinharts 1915-1978, David and Deborah Bond 1979-2003. The store was closed until 2008.
Today’s Wanamakers General Store:
In 2008 Arian and Tim Hungaski reopened the store. After managing the store for two years Kyra Hendricks joined Arian Hungaski as co-owner in 2013.
Today we are working hard to carry on Wanamakers’ proud tradition as a full-service general store. We offer groceries, a wide range of bulk foods, locally produced foods, arts and crafts. USA manufactured toys, and homemade deli items. Visit our history and menu pages to learn more.
As always, send us your suggestions on how our store can best serve you. We’re so glad you dropped in!
